The Birth of a Volcano Dragon

chapter_72_

I have my son to thank for my new career as a children’s author. About a year ago, we were out to eat with a friend. It had been a long day, the meal was over, and we were waiting for everyone to finish their dessert. So, as four-year-old boys sometimes do, he started causing trouble.

I stopped him and said: tell me a story. I looked at his shirt, which had a dragon on it, and gave him a character. I asked where the dragon lived. He informed me that his dragon, Edgar, lived in a volcano. We both spent the next few minutes adding to the story, and then it was time to leave.

As soon as we got home that evening, I went to my computer and wrote the first draft of The Volcano Dragon. I spent the next couple weeks adding to it, then I sent it off to an editor for her invaluable input. Another rewrite, and then the job of finding an illustrator! And boy did I ever luck out with my illustrator. Her art has brought our story to life.

Publishing a book takes a lot of work, and a lot of help. I’ve received so much input and assistance from friends and family along the way, and it has all helped make this possible. But mostly, we can thank a little boy for inspiring the creation of The Volcano Dragon. I hope you love it as much as we do!

Baby’s First Field Guide release!

LittleOrnithologist   LittleLepidopterist-2

While I’ve been waiting on the formatting for The Volcano Dragon, I’ve been working on a second series, Baby’s First Field Guide. These books were inspired by my daughter’s love of birds. While visiting my parents, she spent hours staring out the windows at the array of bird feeders my father has set up. She shouted out the colors of the birds as she saw them: red bird!! yellow bird!!

I began putting together a little field guide for her, including all the birds she saw and recognized, but with a little bit more information. The Baby’s First Field Guide series is a collection of nonfiction children’s books meant to capture the attention of little ones who love watching nature as much as my kids do.

The print and ebooks are now available for sale. We have a couple advanced hard copies here and my daughter reaches for them again and again. She loves the photographs and has started repeating the information back to me. For buy links, please visit the book pages: Little Ornithologist and Little Lepidopterist.

Keep your eyes open for the next two books in the series: Little Ophiologist and Little Backyard Naturalist. If you haven’t already done so, sign up for my newsletter to stay up to date!
